Eric Rust was my youth pastor when I was in high school. In 2001 I moved from Clovis, CA to Sandpoint, ID to serve as music pastor in the church he was starting, Cedar Hills.
I left that role in December of 2007. Since then, I’ve never reconnected with a church. I’ve attended several from time to time; I’ve listened to podcasts; read (ok, listened to) countless books including the Bible; and discussed spirituality, Christian and otherwise, with countless friends and acquaintances.
Our lunch (and the recent Sunday morning I spent at Cedar Hills with my folks when they were visiting) reminded me of my respect for Eric. He is committed to and loves the local church. It appears that to him, it is the truest expression of Christ-centered community in our world today.
In recent years, Cedar Hills (and he as its leader) has walked through several challenges. One of these was comprised of a group of insiders with a strong conviction that the church needed to embrace a more fundamentalist posture and that Eric needed to resign if he wouldn’t acquiesce. Don’t worry—he didn’t cave and the coup failed.
Listening to his recount of the ordeal was refreshing. He spoke of doctrine, conviction, and opinion—the nomenclature he has adopted to contextualize and categorize different issues faced by practicing Christians. Per his comments, Cedar Hills has limited itself to a handful (~5) of doctrines, which are the non-negotiable beliefs about the truth of the Gospel. Convictions are globally negotiable but very important to the community of Cedar Hills. An example of a conviction might be that all sin is equal—an unruly temper will disqualify one from church leadership as quickly as a cocaine habit. Opinions (as the title suggests) are inconsequential preferences.
I was encouraged by his words and his spirit. He reminded me that there are still churches in America that are refusing to pick up arms in the culture wars of COVID masks and unisex bathrooms.
Almost more refreshing than this refusal to engage in the “us vs. them” battles that have become the norm in America, was the fact that he (they) still hold to many traditional Christian values and norms.
This is not to say that I share many of these beliefs (probably few, if any) but that he is modeling and championing the ability to “disagree and embrace” that seems damn near extinct in modern (American?) society.
One’s ability to maintain a core value or belief in the face of opposition while still metaphorically embracing (engaging in relationship with) the “other” is a critical (I can’t think of a more intense word, but it’s critical on the level of blood to the human body) aspect to any group/community/society that is 1) comprised of more than a handful of people; 2) has a desire to live with some level of peace and equanimity; and 3) does not want to live within a facist or dictatorial model of governance.
People are complex and fluid and fickle. There will always be disparate perspectives and issues upon which we disagree, even with those closest to us. We may often suppress these perspectives for the sake of peace, but this does not make them any less real. And short of abandoning the belief or value at the heart of our perspectives, the only other option to coexist (and dare I say thrive?) together is to have the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual capacity to simultaneously embrace our belief and our neighbor who does not share it.
I couldn’t even begin to count the number or quantify the significance of the evolutions of my ideas, beliefs, and values, over the (relatively) short 44 years I’ve been a person in the world. This awareness is helpful when it comes time to embrace those with whom I disagree. After all, if I was having a conversation with my younger (or older) self, I would often be faced with the same dilemma. And while I have (and will) be responsible for many regrettable decisions, comments, and actions throughout my life, I’m grateful for who and where I am today and the path on which I tread with all its hassles, challenges, and opportunities surrounded by partners, adversaries, mentors, and trolls.

But if I'm being honest, <b>it's all additive</b> for me.
For example, I've been avoiding several intimidating tasks recently. My go-to distraction has been Sim City BuildIt for iOS. While this is a source of shame and self-derision in my less mindful moments, it has also revealed a truth about myself.
The truth is that I have an expectation that if I spend enough time and put all the buildings and utilites in just the right place, that I can have a cool, interesting, thriving city that exists in a state of equilibrium.
Like, just so.
Like, OCD level (undiagnosed, but who knows?).
This realization became an epiphany.
The factor that brought all into focus is the "feature" allowing users to launch disasters. Evidently this is designed to make the game more fun and interesting, but to me, it feels like a frustratingly superfluous way to ruin the perfect city for which I've been striving.
This realization also revealed that I have a similar belief outside the game— that if I work hard enough and make all the right decisions, that I can check everything off my list and life can be perfect.
I know this is ridiculous and unrealistic, but I can feel that it's a belief in my gut.
Which explains the frustration I feel when I can't finish everything on the list and some things aren't perfect.
So, thanks to Sim City BuildIt, I have a clearer picture of the reality of my own unspoken expectations, and I can work to shift that awareness to more realistic expectations.

Saw this post by a friend of mine tonight on the Facebook. Why are Christians so intent on convincing everybody that we're assholes who are complete slaves to pop culture? There must be some secret Biblical text that I'm missing...<br />
<br />
I'm dying to know the name of the church, but what's the point? The American church is plagued with this kind of pathetic apathy and carelessness. fcuk. <br />

There were a few highlights for me. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ivan-Alyosha/130165677020912"tagrget="_blank">Ivan and Alyosha</a> were shockingly great. The buzz around town continues to include their name. <a href="http://darren-smith.com"target="_blank">Darren Smith</a> was incredible as well. His new record, Boomtown, is really growing on me and I anticipate it'll be a staple for a while.
<br />
<br />Rodney Crowell headlined the second Saturday - the country night. I was completely unprepared for the amazing show that night. As soon as I arrived at the grounds and heard the band warming up, I was in love. Jedd Hughes's tone and playing washed over me like a warm buzz - I was entranced. I had a chance to speak with him later when he admitted that the warm up was "just messing about" and I knew I was in for a treat. Rodney's songs and leadership of the band were masterful on so many levels. He's probably forgotten more great lines than I'll ever write. Keio Stroud was as solid as an old steam engine on the drums and Allison Prestwood's bass tone and licks were incredible as well. She wasn't flashy, that would have been out of place. She knew just where to fill, just where to lay back, and just where to rock the hell out of the low end.
<br />
<br />I got to hang out with Jedd and Keio a bit after the show. I don't normally get star-struck, but I felt like a bumbling fool later that evening as I replayed the conversations. They were both very nice and all I could do was keep gushing about how great the show was. Sure it was embarrassing, but let that be a lesson to you all. If you ever get a chance to see any of these incredible artists either solo or together, don't miss it. You'll be in for a treat.justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11492664.post-79038562797250033112010-12-08T10:36:00.000-08:002010-12-08T10:50:26.656-08:00I'm taking part of Feel The Hunger day today. African adventure inspires local couple to ‘Feel the Hunger’
By Anna Foulsham, Special to the Bee
Editor’s note: This is the third of three stories about a local initiative, Feel the Hunger Day, to raise awareness of world hunger.
SANDPOINT, IDAHO–Many people in Sandpoint are now counting down the days until “Feel the Hunger Day” this Wednesday, Dec. 8, when they will eat just half a cup of rice all day to raise awareness of world hunger. Some might well be apprehensive, knowing that it won’t be easy and that they will go to bed hungry. But they will at least be able to look forward to a lot more food the next day, unlike the children encountered by Sandpoint locals Justin and Jen Landis on a visit to Uganda in 2007, for whom being hungry is a daily reality.
After a chance meeting with representatives from the International Children’s Network (ICN) at a fundraiser, the Landises were touched by the work the organization was doing and wanted to get involved.
“We liked the ICN model: helping at-risk children to get an education and break the cycle of poverty – giving them a leg up, not just a handout,” says Justin Landis.
During their visit to Uganda with ICN, the couple went to six different schools run by the network in the capital city, Kampala, and in nearby rural areas. Only children who were sponsored were able to go to school.
“For these children, school didn’t just mean education, but food and clothing, too,” says Justin Landis. “They got two bowls of rice a day – probably the only food they would get, and a school uniform – some of the only clothes they had.”
Despite the hunger that these children were living with every day, they didn’t seem to have a high level of desperation, the couple noticed.
“This is their reality, they are used to it,” says Justin Landis. “But being used to something doesn’t make it right.”
The couple believes that sponsorship is a great way to help fight poverty and hunger, and as a result of their trip, they chose to sponsor two children from Uganda. The first was a 9-year-old girl named Florence, who they met at a school in Kampala, and with whom Jen Landis, in particular, felt a strong bond.
The second was a 1-year-old boy, Matsiko Daniel, who they met at one of the clinics that ICN also runs in Uganda.
“Matsiko Daniel’s dad brought him to the clinic, dangling him by one arm, and just dumped him there like a sack of potatoes,” says Justin. “He was emaciated and almost completely unresponsive; only his eyes were moving.”
The little boy had been badly neglected by his unstable parents, possible substance abusers. Thanks to being sponsored, Matsiko Daniel (Matsiko meaning “hope” in the local language) was given a new start, as Justin Landis saw for himself when he returned to Uganda a year later: “The organization had found a lady in the area for him to live with, and I could see he had really bonded with his new ‘mom’ and he was looking healthy.”
Justin and Jen Landis found it hard not to want to help all the children they encountered in Africa.
“At the schools we saw other kids who weren’t sponsored, and they looked even gaunter, and less well taken care of. It made us realize we weren’t seeing the whole problem,” says Justin Landis. “There’s a tension – between wanting to do what you can, and feeling that there’s so much you can’t do. But sponsorship is something we can do consistently – we want to stay with Florence and Matsiko Daniel as they grow up and hopefully go to university.”
Keen supporters of Feel the Hunger Day, the Landises feel that it is an excellent way for people in Sandpoint and elsewhere to get involved in the issue of world hunger.
“Even to see hunger and poverty like we did is not to experience it,” says Justin Landis. “We don’t all need to go to Africa, but we DO all need to have our eyes open to the needs around us and take advantage of the opportunities we have to help. There’s plenty we can do locally, too.”

Count of Monte Cristo - never thought, "he should forgive those people"
matt 18:21 - parable of the unforgiving debtor
how many times should i forgive someone? 70x7
justice is God's job: forgiving someone acknowleges that it's not my business.
What if my first response was compassion? What if my goal was to restore every one of my relationships?
18:32 - "you evil servant...shouldn't you have mercy on your fellow servant?"
I've been forgiven incredible wrongs in my life, and i need to forgive in kind.
This week at the Schweitzer chapel, there was a record crowd. Many Cedar Hillians who had been skiing or snowboarding during the day decided to stay on the mountain and worship with the crowd at the Schweitzer chapel.
It's a fun vibe in the chapel. We've stripped the gathering down to its barest minimum in order to embrace the value of simplicity and allow us to focus on what's important - relationships with God and each other.
So, if you're around the mountain, or just curious, stop by the Schweitzer chapel at 5:30 pm on Saturday night and hang out with a group of people who are trying to live more similarly to that way Jesus did. We're doing our best to yeild the fruits of God's spirit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

After hearing the recording of our radio performance, I was positively motivated. I called Bruce Bishop the next day to set up a recording date. Unfortunately, he was even more ambitious than I and I had to postpone his first suggestion by a week.<br /><br />All that to say that I'll be in the studio on May 30th. My goal is to get 4 to 5 songs recorded, so that I can have an ep to peddle and a good recording to help get more gigs.<br /><br />I haven't heard anything from Dyno yet but I'm hoping I'll be able to get her to listen to me soon and get a date at the Festival at Sandpoint. It was very cold, especially as I tried to play guitar chords. But it was so worth it. It was a wonderful morning that embodied the significance of Easter for me - the victory Christ holds over death. And I can't think of a better way to celebrate his life than by standing among his awesome creation and surveying his handiwork for miles in all directions. I got to participate by leading the group in three songs. As my fingers stiffened and hurt, my mind was so thankful for Christ's love for us.<br /><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Fheyjustinlandis%2Falbumid%2F5323880205648016657%3Fkind%3Dphoto%26alt%3Drss" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center>justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11492664.post-35656014972956442802009-04-01T22:30:00.000-07:002009-04-02T08:52:37.407-07:00Ten Out Of Tenn RocksAt work on Friday, I was listening to 95.3 KPND as I often do. Mr. Johnny Knight, the morning DJ, plays a game where callers have to identify a film from a short audio excerpt. On this Friday, I happened to hear a clip from Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and my ears perked up. Piced up the phone, dialed the station, got through, answered correctly, won tickets to a show in Spokane. Awesome! Never heard of the band. Not to worry, there is a wonderful music discovery tool called "the internet." Check it out.<br /><br />Anyway, I found my way to http://reverbnation.com/tenoutoftenn and was quite excited by what I heard. <br /><br />The show was Monday at the Alter Knit Lounge in Spokane, and it was incredible! There were way fewer people there than there should have been. About 50, I would say. We had a table right up front and center. The songs were great, the musicians were fun, the chemistry was good, the alcohol was flowing, the kids were with grandma.<br /><br />I really urge any of you interested in good music to check out this compilation. It'a a group of musicians from Nashville who decided to pool their panache and fan base into a fun tour where each of them plays about 2 songs per night. The rest of the musicians back up whoever happens to be in the spotlight at the moment.<br /><br />After the show, the band just hung out. They didn't have anywhere to be until 3 or 4 am (bus call) when they'd travel to the next town and sleep in the way. We got to chat with most of them, and give them props for a job well done.<br /><br /><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Fheyjustinlandis%2Falbumid%2F5320091038373730177%3Fkind%3Dphoto%26alt%3Drss" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></center><br /><br />Matthew Perryman Jones finished the night with his new (soon to be) hit Save You. He then proceeded to tell us that he had a song on One Tree Hill that night, so the bartenders turned it on and we all watched together as the song he'd just played, played in the background of the show's ending scenes. He was ecstatic. The other musicians were so happy for him. We were all gathered at the front of the stage, watching the tv. It was a beautiful moment.<br /><br />Then, to cap it all off, Jeremy Lister grabbed a guitar and we proceeded to sing, in a standing circle at the front of the stage, Bob Dylan's I Shall Overcome. Man, what a night.justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11492664.post-90639237170892276162009-01-18T19:45:00.001-08:002009-01-18T19:51:20.334-08:00Thanks For the Support!I just wanted to send a shout out to all my incredible friends who come out to hear me play music. David and Karianne Yarnell haven't missed a single show. They are incredible. <br /><br />I played at the Mojo Coyote Cafe tonight at Schweitzer. A bunch of people came out and listened. These people also ordered drinks, and were very generous with me too. As I was leaving, the manager of the cafe said she wanted to have me back soon. Apparently this wine tasting was more successful than normal, as the house was packed the whole time. A whole half that house was packed with my friends, which reminds me how awesome my friends are to come out and support me, and patronize the establishment at which I'm playing.<br /><br />So thank you all. I'm tempted to start naming names, but I know I'd forget someone and then feel like a total jerk, so let me just say that I am a very blessed person, and have a ton of support from my friends. I am very grateful for the support and would not make it without it.<br /><br />Thanks everyone. You guys rock!<br /><br /><br /><center><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://cache.reverbnation.com/widgets/swf/11/fancollector.swf?page_object_id=artist_357780&backgroundcolor=333333&font_color=FFFFFF&posted_by=artist_357780&hide_street_team=false" height="100" width="434" /><br/><a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/c./a4/11/357780/Artist/357780/Artist/link"><img alt="Justin%20Landis" border="0" height="19" src="http://cache.reverbnation.com/widgets/content/11/footer.png" width="434" /></a><br/><img style="visibility:hidden;width:0px;height:0px;" border=0 width=0 height=0 src="http://www.reverbnation.com/widgets/trk/11/artist_357780/artist_357780/t.gif"><a href="http://www.quantcast.com/p-05---xoNhTXVc" target="_blank"><img src="http://pixel.quantserve.com/pixel/p-05---xoNhTXVc.gif" style="display: none" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt="Quantcast"/></a><img style="visibility:hidden;width:0px;height:0px;" border=0 width=0 height=0 src="http://counters.gigya.com/wildfire/IMP/CXNID=2000002.11NXC/bT*xJmx*PTEyMzIzMzcwMjMwNTYmcHQ9MTIzMjMzNzAyNTI5MSZwPTI3MDgxJmQ9ZmFuJTVGY29sbGVjdG9yJTVGZmlyc3QlNUZnZW4mZz*xJnQ9.gif" /></embed></center>justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11492664.post-81809380646283769612009-01-16T13:02:00.000-08:002009-01-17T08:50:50.391-08:00Sorry to All My Conservative Friends and Family...but, I'm quite excited about our new president. Between his priority on diplomacy over military action, and his seeming desire to work with those on either side of aisle, I'm optimistic about where we're going. <br /><br />So, here's a place where you can watch the inauguration. <br /><center><object width="512" height="296"><param name="movie" value="http://www.hulu.com/live/embed/kqDzjGqsvKQZKY1CUG_aDSkM_bxqboC5"></param><embed src="http://www.hulu.com/live/embed/kqDzjGqsvKQZKY1CUG_aDSkM_bxqboC5" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="512" height="296"></embed></object></center>justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11492664.post-63598659776095778812009-01-14T23:19:00.000-08:002009-01-15T07:48:06.967-08:00One Lucky FellaI was walking home from today when I noticed a "For Rent" sign. My mind grapes started stirring ad I thought it would be awesome to have a small space where I could keep all my music gear set up. Sort of a creative, rehearsal space. However, while it may come as a shock to even those of you closest to me, I don't have hundreds of extra dollars to spend on recreational space every month.<br /><br />The first call was a dead end. The second sign I saw on my way was unhelpful as well. The third call ended up being to Heather Pedersen. It took a few minutes on the phone for us to realize who each other were. To save me more typing, she offered to let me use a vacant office space until it is leased. Ya Hoo!!<br /><br />So, now I've got a space to set up and get some stuff done. I'm very, very, very excited about this. I wish it was Monday already, but I'll just have to wait.<br /><br />What a generous offer. Ya Hoo!!!!justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11492664.post-77502211679751265832009-01-05T11:15:00.000-08:002009-01-05T11:31:26.278-08:00One-Day-A-Week Serious<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://whereistand.com/justinlandis/Thumbnail"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 120px;" src="http://whereistand.com/justinlandis/Thumbnail" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />So, I'm finally putting some energy into booking some more live shows. I've done a bit of recording at home and am working on creating a press pack to help in booking aforementioned live shows. I'm very excited about this, as I love playing recording and producing music.<br /><br />The biggest hurdle for me is insecurity. In networking with other musicians and friends, I consistently feel like a hack. I just commented on a friend's profile on myspace and asked him to check out <a href="http://justinlandis.com"target="_blank">justinlandis.com</a> and let me know what he thinks. Then I went to his site, <a href="http://tjsherrill.com"target="_blank">tjsherrill.com</a> and felt embarassed about my own. I know it's not a competition, and he's not the kind of guy who's gonna judge me for my lack of professionalism, but I still struggle with that.<br /><br />So my goal is to learn to appreciate what I create for its own merits, and not for how it compares with others. I'm not very good at this at all, but I'm better than I used to be.<br /><br />Watch this blog, and <a href="http://justinlandis.com"target="_blank">justinlandis.com</a> for further releases and eventually an e.p.justinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18177927349742280296noreply@blogger.com0
